Document 1835 DOCN M94A1835 TI Health care costs: implications for HIV prevention. DT 9412 AU Sergeant J; Murray R; Maderson L; Johnson-Laird L SO Int Conf AIDS. 1994 Aug 7-12;10(1):440 (abstract no. PD0369). Unique Identifier : AIDSLINE ICA10/94370740 AB OBJECTIVES: To review the annual health costs of treatment and care for patients with AIDS or patients with severe HIV disease (defined as HIV infected patients with CD4 count below 200 but no AIDS diagnosis). These average annual costs were compared with estimates from 1991 and changes in pattern of resource use assessed. RESULTS: Data will be presented to show trends in health expenditure on treatment and care set against trends in prevalent AIDS cases in England. Average annual cost per patient for AIDS and HIV severe disease will be presented as a range. Costs will be categorised as in-patient care, day patient care, out-patient care, drugs and home support. The pattern of resource use will be compared with the estimates for treatment and care expenditure in 1990/91. The potential impact of prevention activities will be discussed. Data will be presented comparing projected life years lost before the age of 65 from AIDS with other major causes of death. Estimated treatment and care costs will be combined with published studies of disease progression to estimate lifetime treatment and care costs of an HIV infected patient.
